In 1952, the United States detonated the first hydrogen bomb, ushering in a terrifying new era of nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union rushed to catch up. But the key figure behind their thermonuclear breakthrough wasn’t a general or a party boss. It was Andrei Sakharov. Recruited in his twenties, Sakharov became the leading scientific mind behind the Soviet H-bomb. His early “Layer Cake” design paved the way for a true multi-stage thermonuclear weapon, helping turn the USSR into a nuclear superpower. Yet witnessing the bomb’s destructive power and radioactive fallout deeply shook him. Sakharov later opposed atmospheric nuclear testing and gradually transformed from celebrated weapons scientist into outspoken dissident and human-rights advocate—eventually winning the Nobel Peace Prize. A Cold War paradox: the man who helped build one of history’s most destructive weapons became one of its most principled critics.
