Today is special for this classic 17/05/............. This is a Kenyan classic that will forever remain fresh. I have always wanted to share and I have every reason to share it today. A friend and former classmate called Amos Mwaniki has just reminded me about the relevance of today for this song. It is May 17. The exact day that Stella came back from Japan and ensuing drama at the airport. Freshley reminds us: "Ilikuwa tarehe kumi na saba, mwezi wa tano....ndio ilikuwa tarehe kamili ya Stella kurudi Kenya, ......" It is about unconditional love and while the story is hilarious, one cannot fail to empathize with Freshley. The story of Stella is alive to many across the country and this perhaps helps to demonstrate why the song is popular in every corner of Kenya. It is done in Kiswahili and this has helped in the full understanding of the story that Freshley passionately tells. It is done by a Mdawida (Taita) musician who also speaks in one or two other Kenyan languages that endear it to many across the country. It is in my opinion a piece that demonstrates the power of the arts in national cohesion, reconciliation and integration.
