The series kicked off with the Magdalene College Library which won the Wood Awards Gold Award in 2021. Designed by architects Niall McLaughlin Architects and engineers Smith & Wallwork, the Magdalene College Library has been described as a "tour de force of architectural design and achievement". Hear from the architects and engineers as they go into detail on the design and process behind the Magdalene College Library. Speakers: 03:40 Tim Allen-Booth - Architect, Niall McLaughlin Tim is an associate at Niall McLaughlin Architects with 25 years of experience in architecture. Since joining the practice in 2006, he has led many of our major higher education and cultural projects. Prior to joining the practice, Tim worked as a project architect at Avanti Architects on healthcare and education projects, and for Development Workshop in Kosovo on a post-war housing reconstruction programme. 21:14 Simon Smith - Engineer, Smith & Wallwork Simon Smith is a structural engineer and co-founder of Smith and Wallwork. He has worked with timber structures for nearly 20 years, pioneering the use of CLT in the UK. As well as design, Simon is involved in teaching and research; he lectures at Cambridge University and his research in tall timber buildings was recognised in the RIBA Presidents Medal Awards. He is also a past director of Trada where he chaired the advisory committee for several years. 33:08 Hannes Voss - EURBAN Limited - Specialist Timber Engineers and Sub-Contractors. Hannes joined EURBAN in 2019 as a Project Manager following several years’ experience working as a Project Architect. His expertise encompasses both design and technical execution: from Conservation to Modern Methods of Construction. With over 10 years’ experience within the construction industry, he continues to strengthen ties within the timber industry with the ambition to build sustainably. Hannes is a graduate of Bauhaus-Universität-Weimar (Germany). 45:44 Panel Discussion: Fernando Perez - Engineer, Smith & Wallwork Fernando Perez has over 10 years of experience as Structural Engineer specialised in timber construction. Former European Development Engineer for Simpson Strong-Tie, he started work with Smith and Wallwork in 2015. Since then, he has gained valuable experience on a variety of projects ranging from high rise to high quality buildings with exposed structural elements.
