The reason for this, it turns out, is that the built-in text drawing functions aren't very good. Fortunately, Game Maker users have taken it upon themselves to make their own. I happen to like this one. Yes, you can use this to serve as an Undertale "text engine." This video is about how to set it up and some basic usage. There's plenty more stuff you can do with Scribble (typewriter effects, etc) that I'll be going over in another video later, plus some technical things.
