This project began in a situation that no homeowner ever wants to face. When I was first contacted, the extension was far from finished — not just inside, but outside as well. There were no windows installed, and access to the space was temporary, through an opening where a future window was meant to be. The project had been abandoned, leaving the homeowner exhausted, disappointed, and unsure how to move forward. She was caring for her disabled father at home, and the extension had been planned to provide a safe bedroom and an accessible wet room. Instead, the work had been left incomplete, with serious issues that needed to be addressed before anything else could continue. When I visited the property, it was clear that this was not a straightforward job. Before any finishing work could begin, I needed to assess what had already been done — and what had been done incorrectly. During this process, I identified multiple building regulation issues that had to be repaired or corrected. Some elements had to be reworked entirely before the interior could be made safe, functional, and compliant. The main focus of the project was always the wet room. This space was essential for daily life, and it needed to be designed properly for wheelchair use, assisted care, and long-term reliability. From the beginning, I explained the process clearly — what needed to be done, why it mattered, and how each stage would build on the next. This project was never about rushing or covering up problems. It was about doing things correctly, in the right order. I formed new stud walls to achieve the correct layout and positioning. Moisture-resistant plasterboard was used as a practical solution, balancing performance with a restricted budget that had already been heavily affected by the earlier experience, without compromising protection. All joints and internal corners were reinforced with flexible waterproof tape. The entire wet room was then fully tanked using a Kerakoll waterproofing system — a critical stage that ensures long-term protection behind the tiles. For drainage, I installed a McAlpine shower gully designed specifically for vinyl wet room floors. The floor slope was carefully planned across a large part of the room to ensure efficient drainage, ease of maintenance, and safe everyday use. The existing central heating was kept in place and neatly boxed in, finished with a large tiled access panel to allow easy future maintenance. The layout was kept open, without fixed glass screens, to maximise space and improve movement within the room. A recessed mirrored feature was added to the shower area to help reflect light and brighten the space, without adding clutter. Tiling was completed using Kerakoll H40 adhesive, chosen for its advanced gel technology. This adhesive allows easy spreading while securely supporting large-format porcelain tiles on both walls and floors. To complete the system, Kerakoll grout and sealant were used throughout, chosen for their durability and consistent performance. For the floor finish, thicker anti-slip vinyl was selected. This was an important decision, as thicker safety vinyl provides better grip, higher resistance, and long-term reliability — particularly important in a space designed for wheelchair use. As the project progressed, I was also asked to complete the bedroom. This included insulating the roof, forming stud walls, boarding, and fully skimming the room to create a warm, comfortable, and usable space. What began as an abandoned, unfinished extension gradually became a safe, functional living environment. This project is a reminder that behind many builds there is a human story — and that careful planning, clear communication, and correct workmanship can restore not just a space, but confidence as well. With sincere thanks to the homeowner for the support and assistance throughout the project — and for keeping the coffee supply excellent. All plumbing and heating works for this project, central heating connections, WC installation, basin fitting and shower installation, were carried out by Nathen from N&G Plumbing & Heating 📞 Contact: 07912 663252. Many thanks to Nathen for the smooth and professional cooperation throughout the project. Waterproofing, adhesive and grout systems used on this project were supplied by Kerakoll, selected for their reliability and performance in wet room environments. Level-access drainage was installed using a McAlpine shower gully, designed specifically for vinyl wet rooms and smooth, step-free access. #Kerakoll #McAlpine
