Full-Thickness Skin Grafts

A skin graft is a procedure in which healthy skin is taken from one part of the body and placed over injured skin on a different part of the body. The healthy skin then grows to replace the injured skin. This technique is often used for burn injuries. Full-thickness skin grafts help reduce healing time and scarring, help the injured area function better and lead to stronger, healthier skin once healed. Full-thickness skin grafts use a thicker layer of donor skin to be placed on the injured skin. In full-thickness skin grafts, the entire top layer of the skin (epidermis) and the entire second layer of the skin (dermis) are used for the donor skin. Full-thickness skin grafts are used for when the injury to the skin is deep.
