The 14th Symposium Human Rights and a Just Society - 15-17 October 2022 - INVITATION The Symposium – Human Rights and A Just Society returns to Poland this Fall on October 15-17, 2022. This program is again offered to all and organized by Loyola Chicago’s John Felice Rome Center (JFRC) and Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU) in Torun, Poland. After a break caused by the unprecedented global pandemic and the unprovoked Russian invasion of the Ukraine bring us back together in unique ways thanks to a spiritus movens and the founding father - Mr John Kurowski (US Lawyer and NCU Visiting Professor). This year’s program, will focus on the human rights issues triggered by the war in Ukraine. We will examine the geopolitical and historical relationship between Russia, the Ukraine, Poland and other countries giving rise to the war, the enormous exodus of from the Ukraine what are now millions of refugees, the incredible response to the influx of these refugees by Poland and others, the atrocities committed by the Russians violating human the human rights of innocent Ukrainian citizens and a discussion of the impact of this war, on our world and what you can do about it. 9.00 a.m. Opening welcome Michał Balcerzak, Associate Professor, Department of International Security, Faculty of Political Science and Security Studies, Nicolaus Copernicus University Todd Waller, Director of the John Felice Rome Center of Loyola University Chicago Peter Schraeder, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Loyola University Chicago 9.30 a.m. – 11.30 a.m. Panel I “The Shock of War: 5 Million Refugees (and counting)” A conversation with Judge Tetyana Antsupova “Being a Refugee and a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ukraine – Personal Perspective; Status of the Courts and Rule of Law in the Ukraine.” Tetyana Antsupova, Judge of the Supreme Court of Ukraine since 2017, Judge of the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court since 2019. Born and raised in Mariupol; former international Human Rights professor of law at the University of Odesa, Ukraine. Refugee: sheltered in Torun from early March to early May, 2022. A Ukrainian Mother’s Story Marika Gvagvaliia, Lawyer, mother and refugee from Kyiv; escaped shelling of the war with two children; husband remains in Kyiv supporting the war effort. Has resided in Camillian monastery in Warsaw since early March with children. She will tell her story. Making way for sheltering refugees in Warsaw Father Roman Zajac, Director of Camillian monastery in Warsaw who has led an effort to house and feed up to 50 refugees and families since the outbreak of the war. The Humanitarian Response: an assistance center in Torun, Poland Tatyana Dembska, self-employed business owner living in Torun. Dedicated her business and employees to run a humanitarian aid center in Torun once the war began.
