Fallibilism

Fallibilism is the epistemological thesis that no belief (theory, view, thesis, and so on) can ever be rationally supported or justified in a conclusive way. Always, there remains a possible doubt as to the truth of the belief. You would be forgiven for thinking that this is akin to academic scepticism, which essentially states that knowledge is impossible, but that isn't the case. Instead, it is closer to dealing with the problems with truth. Even the most well-justified belief that seems to be strongly indicating a conclusion true could still be false for a number of reasons, the major one being the limited scope of our knowledge of all things and the fact that it seems like everyone has had at least one false belief in their life, if not many. You could be a little bit more restrictive with fallibilism, and state that it doesn't necessarily relate to ALL beliefs. e.g. You taste chocolate, you like it, you, therefore, believe you like that chocolate and it's conclusive because it is personal to you it could be one of many things you restrict applying fallibilism too. Some argument could still be made for this truth to be contingent. For example, in the future, your taste buds could change and you no longer like that chocolate, and whilst they have a point, it's unlikely, though there are other contingent truths that would have a more likely chance of changing over time. But how does fallibilism work as a theory of knowledge if it states that most if not all beliefs cannot be conclusively justified to be true? That most if not all beliefs are fallible. The simplest way to explain it might be going back to the idea of the JTB, except we have a couple of modifications. The justification has to be strong/balanced with the belief. Feeling justified is not the same as being justified. There can't be a similar belief with equal explanatory power and justification, it has to be the best explanation. And the truth.. it is accepted that the truth is more tentative due to our fallibility. Something might be considered knowledge until it is shown to be false. It does mean that it was never really knowledge, just perceived knowledge, but it works nonetheless. You might think that this sounds a little bit like falsification, and you'd be right. There's a reason why most scientists and modern epistemologists are fallibilists. #fallibalism #epistemology #knowledge #theoryofknowlege #truth
