Please introduce yourself. 0:15 Hello everyone, I’m Maryam Wahid. 0:18 I’m a photographer by background, currently working with the Tasweer Photo Festival, part of Qatar Museums. 0:22 But you're an award-winning photographer! Tell us about that. 0:26 How did you win your first big award? 0:34 Before moving to Qatar, my journey was all about photography. 0:39 In 2018, I graduated with a first-class degree in photography from Birmingham City University. 0:45 I’m from Birmingham, and after graduating, 0:48 I wanted to engage with both the commercial and artistic sides of photography. 0:52 At university, my work focused on themes of identity, home, and belonging. 0:57 As a British Asian, these topics resonated with me, and photography became my way of exploring them. 1:03 After graduating, I sought funding to develop my projects further. 1:09 In 2018 and 2021, I won the Portrait of Britain award, 1:14 hosted by the British Journal of Photography. 1:19 I’ve received a few other awards as well over the years. 1:24 That’s amazing! Now, let’s go back— 1:28 How did your passion for photography first begin? 1:31 What inspired you to pick up a camera? 1:36 Great question! Photography has always been a part of my life. 1:40 I’ve always been fascinated by the power of an image. 1:46 Growing up, I didn’t visit art galleries often, 1:50 but when I did, photography always stood out to me. 1:53 Even flipping through family photo albums felt like discovering a whole different world. 1:59 I remember looking at pictures of my father as a young man— 2:03 it felt like seeing a version of him I never knew. 2:06 Photography’s ability to capture time and tell stories fascinated me. 2:10 That’s when it evolved from a hobby to a deep passion. 2:16 At one point, I told my parents I wanted to study photography at university. 2:20 How did they react? 2:24 Surprisingly, they were very supportive! 2:30 Especially my mother—she always encouraged me. 2:34 During my A-levels, I studied a mix of subjects— 2:38 economics, business, religious studies, and photography. 2:42 Photography was always my favorite, but I had backup plans. 2:46 At one point, I even applied for a Theology and Religion degree. 2:50 But that summer, while waiting for my results, 2:55 I realized photography was what I truly loved. 2:58 It wasn’t the most traditional choice, but I knew it was right. 3:02 Now, looking back, I can’t believe where this journey has taken me. 3:07 That passion has shaped everything I do today. 3:12 Absolutely! And I’m sure your other subjects influenced your photography too. 3:16 Definitely! Everything I studied has shaped my work.
