After 60 years of angling, John Wilson heads north of the Arctic Circle for his very first experience of ice fishing in Norway. This Fishing World adventure takes place near Tromsø, on the 70th parallel, in the dramatic landscape of Lapland — home to the indigenous Sami people, towering mountains, and breathtaking wildlife. The journey begins on the open fjords aboard skipper Holger Burøe’s boat TRS Explorer, alongside angling journalist Dave Lewis. Fishing deep-water marks in around 50 m, John and Dave target the legendary Norwegian Arctic cod using heavy perks, rubber shads, and vertical jigs. Cod swarm through the depths, producing nonstop action with fish averaging 8–12 lbs, but it’s the occasional 30–40 lb specimen that shows why this region has a global reputation for giant cod. Alongside the fishing, the crew witness incredible sights: spring whales breaching clear of the water and the majestic white-tailed sea eagle patrolling the skies. After success at sea, John ventures inland to the frozen lakes of Nordreisa for a new challenge — ice fishing in temperatures as low as -20°C. With guidance from local expert Oyon, John drills through 20 inches of ice to drop herring baits and small jigs into depths of nearly 200 ft. Despite frozen rod rings and biting wind chill, the excitement builds as fish begin to bite: his first ever cod through the ice, followed by lively haddock on lightweight jigging gear. Between the catches, John learns about the Sami way of life, their connection to reindeer herding, and the wildlife of this harsh yet beautiful environment, where moose, lynx, wolverines, and arctic hares roam. Finally, as a snowstorm closes in, John and Oyon retreat into a traditional Sami tent to warm up, reflecting on a truly unique fishing experience.
