I make picture frames now and again, and I’m looking for ways to make them nicer. In this week’s workshop improvement, I made jigs to use with my Shaper Origin hand-held CNC router. I made two jigs, one for 30 by 20 artwork, and one for 16 by 20 artwork. The jigs worked as expected, and I can reuse them over and over. I’m probably going to make some other sizes. I used the jig to cut the miters for one of the frames. The result was no better than fair. The frame went together and was square, but the joints had small but noticeable gaps. Next I made a frame the old-fashioned way (table saw to cut the miters and to add splined reinforcements), then use the Shaper Origin to add an intricate inlay with contrasting wood. This one was satisfyingly pretty! 00:05 MDF a little smaller than the frame opening, then add the Shaper tape 01:47 Reusable plywood spoilboard 02:36 Cutting the miters with Shaper Origin – not perfect 04:48 Using the jig to add simple decoration 07:00 An intricate decoration and I’m starting to get happy 08:43 Added engraving detail and now I’m really happy! Workshop Improvement of the Week is my woodworking and project vlog. Hand tools, power tools, accessories and everything that goes into a shop are my topics. I'm making an upgrade a week until I run out of ideas, but there is still a lot more on my improvement and upgrade list.
