What are the complications involved in LSCS?

I am Dr. Parul monga bedi. A consultant at bedi hospital, associated with Ayu health hospitals.I am an OB-GYN consultant. I deal with high risk obstetrics, gynae cases and infertility cases. Today, I am going to tell you something about the cesarean sections that is the LSCS or C sections. Cesarean section is a way of delivering a baby through an operation by opening the mother's abdomen and uterus. There can be a number of reasons why we do a cesarean section? There could be mother related reasons or baby related reasons. which means that the baby is too big to come out from the vaginal canal or the mother’s pelvis is too small. It can be either. Then maternal exhaustion can also be another reason. Sometimes the mother herself has some medical reasons because of which we have to do a cesarean section. In pertaining to the baby, baby can pass meconium or in layman language when baby poops inside the stomach or baby’s decrease baby movements or birth asphyxia or baby’ low or high heartbeat and baby feels uncomfortable inside. These are the reasons that we have take baby out through cesarean sections. Whereas advantages and disadvantages are concerned, there is no added advantage of getting a cesarean done. It is just that some patients feel they dont have to go through the pain of normal delivery. So that is why some patients opt for a cesarean section. For the disadvantages, the recovery period of the patient increases. The patient has to be on bed rest for a longer period of time as related to a normal delivery. So the complications involved in cesarean section can be many and before taking you for a cesarean section, your doctor will be taking a consent, a written consent regarding the complications which can be related to you specifically or in general as well. So what are the general complications? General complications can be infection, blood loss, need for blood transfusion during your cesarean section due to sudden blood loss. Other complications can be wound infection after the cesarean is done. There can be infection in your stitches. This can be due to either reaction with thread that we are using or due to unhygienic reasons of the patient. Apart from this, during cesarean section, there is a risk of injury to the surrounding structures like the intestines, bladder, the major vessels or nerves which is easily manageable in the hospital in tertiary care center. In case of an increased number of complications, which your center or your doctor is not able to manage, they may refer you to a higher tertiary care center. Recovery period of cesarean section is about one and a half to two months for a complete recovery. Otherwise, patients get walking and they can do their own work in a day or two.
