Jane demonstrates opening and using a new Arches block of watercolor paper. Just getting INTO the paper can be a challenge. What about that black sheet of paper? Are you supposed to take the pages off the block? Are they stretched? Jane takes you step by step through getting ready to paint on your Arches block of paper. (The same steps work for all watercolor blocks.) As a review: 1) The paper is cut to fit the heavy cardboard backing and is glued at the edges to keep it tightly compressed as a block. It is put together this way for your convenience in carrying around paper already on a substantial back of heavy cardboard. 2) There is a small empty space in the glued edge. Insert a letter opener, palette knife or other thin flat surface, and slide it "flatly" around all four edges. Be careful not to scratch the surface of the watercolor paper. 3) Keep the paper on the block until you painting is completed--and dried completely. You have paid extra to have it affixed to the block for your convenience. 4) Keeo the foldover sheet on the pad. It protects your work, and the pages as you tote they around. You can keep the black paper or not. I do not. 5) The paper is NOT technically "stretched". It will flatten out as it dries. But, if you get it super-super wet (and remove the sizing) it may not dry to completely flat. If you paint super wet-on-wet, I recommend 300# paper AND stretching. Thank you for watching.
