The Fairey Swordfish is an aircraft that achieved higher than its expectations. Developed in the mid-1930s, it was obsolete by the start of the second World War, but that didn't stop it from achieving some spectacular successes during the conflict. Nicknamed the 'Stringbag' by some, it was operated by the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. It saw action in the Atlantic, Norway, the Home Front, France and the Mediterranean. It took centre stage during the famous attack at Taranto, where Swordfish sank or damaged numerous Italian Warships. The Swordfish also played its part in the sinking of the Bismarck, scoring multiple torpedo hits during the chase. The Swordfish managed to find use throughout the war, to the point that it outlived the aircraft designed to replace it - the Fairey Albacore. *** Producing these videos is a hobby of mine. I have a passion for history, and personally own a large collection of books, journals and other texts, and endeavor to do as much research as possible. However if there are any mistakes, please don't hesitate to reach out and correct anything :) Sources: https://www.amazon.com.au/Fairey-Airc... https://www.amazon.com/British-naval-... https://www.amazon.com.au/Attack-Tara...
