Gynecomastia occurs because of actual growth of the breast tissue due to sensitivity to normal hormone levels. When this situation arises, it's not unusual for them to request removal of that breast tissue. This is preformed through a procedure called a subcutaneous mastectomy. Men don't usually have difficulty deciding that they want a subcutaneous mastectomy, but in most cases they have a difficult time figuring out how it's going to fit in their life and as a result of that they worry a lot about the recovery process. Following a subcutaneous mastectomy, patients are asked to wear a compressive garment for about 3 weeks following surgery. This compression garment helps minimize swelling and helps with pain relief. Following the surgical procedure, they'll have a drain in place for about 7 to 10 days. This drain also minimizes swelling and prevents fluid from accumulating beneath the skin. Patients will be given pain medications, usually narcotics, for about 2 to 3 days following the procedure and then they will be switched to Tylenol for an additional 7 to 10 days. The biggest question that patients are concerned about is when will they be able to resume their normal activity levels. In most cases, we tell patients to take a week off from work, but we have patients who have the procedure on a Friday and they're back to work the following Monday if they have jobs that don't involve heavy lifting or strenuous activity. In patients who have jobs that require more strenuous activities and heavy lifting, we tell those patients they shouldn't return to work for about 4 to 6 weeks. This is a procedure that's associated with extremely high satisfaction rates and excellent success rates, but it is important to realize that no two patients with gynecomastia are ever the same. Their situations are different. Their jobs are different. Because of that, the recovery varies from patient to patient and depends upon the extent of the surgery and their social situation.
