Scientists Can’t Explain Hoag’s Object… And It Just Got Stranger There is a galaxy that shouldn't be there in Serpens, which is about 600 million light-years away: Hoag's Object is a nearly perfect ring of stars circling a spheroidal core that doesn't seem to be affected. There is a nearly empty space between them. The way it moves, its shared redshift, and its dark matter ring all point to a "single system," but its shape suggests a "catastrophic collision," since it doesn't have any of the expected tidal debris, bars, or warps. The H-one super-ring, the differences in age and metal content between the core and the ring, and the new high-resolution images have all made the situation worse. It's possible for our models to make ring galaxies, but not this one.
