Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation

Some people have a condition known as Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. It is similar to the feeling that people get when they come off an aeroplane. There is a blocked feeling in the ear with occasional crackling or popping heard. This problem normally clears itself quickly, but in some people it can be permanent leading to considerable distress. This new technique is used to avoid having to constantly 'pop' or ventilate your own ears (or resorting to grommet insertion). A deflated balloon is inserted into the nose and into the tube that connects the ear to the nose (the Eustachian tube). Once the surgeon is sure that the guide wire is in the right place the balloon is pushed forward into the correct place. The balloon is inflated to 12 atmospheres for 2 minutes, and then deflated and removed.
