How do I prepare for upper eyelid surgery? With regards to preparing for upper eyelid surgery, there isn't much that we ask you to do. Common things such as stopping aspirin, Advil, excessive Vitamin E, grape seed extract, gingko, all of those medications that might create more bruising is typical. We do require an eye exam within the past year. We have learned that many people have not had their eyes examined in more than a decade. While this is not a requirement for many facial plastic surgeons throughout the country, we feel it's a minor inconvenience. Eye exams may be performed by an optometrist or Opthamologist almost anywhere they are offered. While the exam can uncover underlying medical problems such as glaucoma or cataracts, what we're really looking for is to see whether or not there is any issue regarding your retina, specifically we want to make sure that there isn't any predisposition or issue associated with retinal detachment. These can lead to visual impairment. While this has never occurred in many thousands of upper Blepharoplasties that I've performed, obtaining an eye exam is an easy thing to do. And we ask you to do it. The other concern to evaluate is the status of the dry eyes. We certainly are able to operate on patients who experience dry eyes, many people have dry eyes. But we might make adjustments based on the underlying reason for your dry eyes. These are all important things that are required to prepare for upper eyelid surgery. With regards to labs and EKG's, and chest x rays, we do not require any of these.
