I must have been only 5 or 6 and I didn't play it, but I watched the attract mode and my mind was blown. Those visions came to haunt me in my dreams that night... Fast forward 8 years or so and I happened to receive a copy of the sequel for the Sega Mega Drive. It was every bit as bloody and brutal as the arcade original, possibly more so. I don't recall any BBFC certification or parental warnings on the box; considering the content is actually quite graphic for the time. The story starts three months after the end of the original game. Rick is haunted by his failure to save Jennifer and is taunted by the Terror Mask, which convinces him into donning it once more. Only the mask can give Rick the strength required to defeat the horrors in the mansion and to rescue Jennifer. As to why Rick loses all of his hair and completely forgoes a pair of shoes whenever he dons the mask, none can say. However, you can't deny that beating the pulp out of some netherworld monstrosities as a bald-headed psycho whilst wielding a two-by-four is pretty darn cool! The game requires a lot pattern memorisation, especially when fighting the end-of-level bosses. It's tough, but with enough practice it's possible to complete it. The game has a really good musical score. Sound wasn't the Mega Drive's strongest point, but there are some haunting melodies combined with some drum samples that really add to the atmosphere. I chose the US version of the game as the music plays far too slowly in the European version for my tastes (probably due to the differences between PAL/NTSC). A pretty good game, although not much replayability in the long-run. #retrogaming
