As a result, Nowases stated that residents of a settlement situated in the Erongo region spend most of their time at shebeens. The community activist said that limited job opportunities and mushrooming of shebeens are contributing to alcohol abuse in Okombahe. Nowases stated some young people are willing to start their business but lack the necessary start-up capital. "Because of unemployment, young people sit at the shebeens and spend time there drinking alcohol. If there are job opportunities, then young people will be busy as they will have their own businesses," Nowases stated. Nowases is also worried that the children in the settlement are growing up in an unfavourable environment because of the presence of alcohol. "Even our kids, the young ones, are mostly at the shebeens, so it's not good. The kids should grow up in a healthy community, not in a community where people always drink and make noise. It’s not good for the kids that are growing up now,”she added. The community activist stated that they want the government and investors to open businesses that will create jobs for the residents, especially the unemployed youth. “Here in Okombahe, as you have seen for yourself, how the community is and how many shebeens are here. If the investors come in, they should at least come in with something to help people,” says Nowases, who believes that job creation and lessening shebeens are the only ways to mitigate alcohol abuse.
