Cornell University's resident Red-tailed Hawks raised four chicks for the first time this past spring. Watch the top moments from an unforgettable breeding season with Big Red, Arthur, and their chicks. In late winter, Cornell University's famed Red-tailed Hawk pair began preparing for another breeding season on campus. The hawks spent a month rebuilding their nest site, and Arthur wooed Big Red with gifts of chipmunks and squirrels. On March 14, Big Red officially kicked off the nesting period by revealing the first egg of the season. Nine days later, Big Red unveiled a surprise—a fourth egg— breaking her trend of always laying three eggs per clutch! Big Red and Arthur shared incubation duties and kept their eggs warm and toasty even during dustings of spring snow. After five weeks, the first pip (or break) in the egg signaled that a hatchling was emerging. The first hawk hatched on April 21, and Big Red was quick to stuff her chick with morsels of snake. One week later, all four fuzzy Red-tailed Hawk chicks had hatched. The chicks were kept well fed thanks to a bounty of prey, caught and delivered by their parents. Big Red and Arthur defended their territory from any potential threats, like this vocal Merlin (a small falcon) that flew above the nest. As the weeks passed and the chicks grew older, they began to gain their footing, learn how to feed themselves, and practice flapping to build their flight muscles. Finally, it was time to fledge, and the four young hawks tested their wings for the first time in early June. When they weren't exploring campus, the fledglings returned to the nest to perch, rest, or tussle over prey deliveries from their parents. Red-tailed Hawk fledglings continue to associate with each other and their parents for several months before finally dispersing in fall. Thanks for watching and learning with us during this unprecedented season for the Cornell Hawks' family. Watch live at allaboutbirds.org/cornellhawks A Red-tailed Hawk pair has been nesting above Cornell University’s athletic fields since 2012. They make use of two different light towers for their nest sites. In 2012, 2015, and 2018–2021 they used a tower near Fernow Hall, and in 2013, 2014, and 2016, they used the tower nearest Weill Hall. We installed cameras at both of these sites to get a better look at the intimate behavior of these well-known birds as they raise their young amid the bustle of a busy campus. #birdcams #live #hawk #birds #wildlife #nature #nowplaying #newyork
