Vinland Saga (ヴィンランド・サガ ) by Makoto Yukimura is currently my top anime of Summer 2019 season and as well as a gorgeous soundtrack, the ending theme (ED) for the first 12 episodes, Torches by Japanese Artist Aimer is absolutely beautiful. I love the simplicity of the song and feel this piece really suits the harp, bringing out the soft and gently timbre of the instrument and really exploiting the upper range. I really enjoyed arranging Torches for harp, adding counter melodies and big chords to enhance this piece. Vinland Saga is a historical anime set in the time of the Vikings and follows a young Viking, Thorfinn’s, journey for revenge. I can’t give more away without spoilers but if you’ve watched and enjoyed live action shows such as Vikings on Amazon Prime or The Last Kingdom on Netflix/BBC, it’s set in a similar world and has the same feel as these shows touching on themes such as conquest and revenge so check it out! Also if you loved the art and animation of shows such as Attack on Titan, Seraph of the End and Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, then you’re in luck as the same animation studio, Wit Studio, is producing this anime! As expected with this studio, the action is full of detail, clean and fluid making brilliant animation as well as some really stunning scenes enhanced by the use of colour and lighting.
