I’m a mature-aged third-year Psychology student in Australia, and 8 weeks ago I underwent a two-level cervical anterior discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery at C4/5 and C5/6. I had two discs removed, spacers inserted with plates and screws drilled in through my throat and neck. In this video I vlog day one (surgery day) through to day five in hospital, sharing my thoughts, feelings, and reflections in the moment. I have two goals with this video: (1) To update you on how I’m doing (thank goodness, I’m recovering and my right arm function has returned). (2) To give you a real, raw look at what this experience was like, whether you’re curious, you’ve got a loved one undergoing ACDF, or you’re about to go through it yourself. You might have seen my previous video about the diagnosis (cervical stenosis, disc degeneration and protrusion) which triggered muscle/nerve issues in my right arm and made surgery urgent. That video got about 6 000 views and 120 comments of people sharing their own stories within a few weeks. An Instagram post on this reached over 3 million people, so clearly this topic resonates. My hope for this vlog is simple: I want you to feel less scared and more hopeful. Recovery is possible. I’ll show you the tough bits, the vulnerable moments, but also the wins from my perspective. Please stay tuned until the end as I share some really good news you’ll possibly want to hear. If you’re new here, please Subscribe and ring the bell so you don’t miss future updates (including my upcoming Honours year, Masters, and how I manage life after surgery).
