As we launched into beautiful conditions we were aware that we shared a similar ETA at the canal as that of the inbound American Mariner. This fact had us looking over our shoulders quite a bit during our paddle. What we were not aware of was that the American Spirit would be outbound from the canal in the same time frame. Once we realized the situation I wanted to get in the canal as soon as possible after the Am Spirit transited because I wasn’t very sure what the gap between the ships would be and the bridge operator would not be happy with paddlers in the canal with the bridge up and a ship imminent. This resulted in me lollygagging a bit in sloppy water outside the canal as the Am Spirit passed. As it turned out there was plenty of a time to safely paddle the canal and the bridge even came down between the ships. Interestingly, as we were hauling the boats the USCG screamed by and out the canal. They were joined the county sheriff’s boat. Apparently the American Spirit had reported a man with a red and black shirt in the water. 🤔🤷♂️
