(19 May 2006) SHOTLIST 1. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Prince Saud al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister, walk in 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Condoleezza Rice, US Secretary of State "I think what we need to do is to have the three tracks on which we are proceeding; one the Security Council track, where we will have action in the Security Council. Secondly, a track that allows us to support by as many means possible as we can the negotiations the EU-3 (France, Germany, Britain) has launched with Iran. And third, we will pursue with likeminded states if necessary steps that we can take outside of the Security Council. But we are committed to making this diplomacy work and that's our overwhelming preoccupation these days. There will be some meetings next week and I just think we need to press ahead." 3. Cutaway 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Prince Saud al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister "What we do hope, what we have anxiety about is the stability and security of our region and definitely the spread of atomic weapons or the threat of spread of atomic weapons in the region is a threat to the countries of the region. Therefore, we hope that all the countries in the region would ascribe to the policy of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Arab League, of having a Middle East, including the Gulf, free of atomic weapons." 5. Cutaway 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Condoleezza Rice, US Secretary of State "So, I just wanted to be very clear that there are prohibitions that we will not cross in dealing with a terrorist group like Hamas, but the Palestinian people deserve our support. We also are partners with Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas), who is the elected president of the Palestinian Authority, and we are going to continue to pursue efforts at peace. We believe there is no other way that Israelis and Palestinians can meet their aspirations." 9. Rice and al-Faisal shake hands and depart STORYLINE Saudi Arabia's foreign minister on Thursday held talks in Washington DC with his US counterpart, Condoleezza Rice. Afterwards, they told reporters their meeting had focused on Iran and the Middle East. On the ongoing issue of the Iranian nuclear weapons programme, Rice said the US was committed to making diplomacy work. For his part, Prince Saud al-Faisal said Saudi Arabia stood for a nuclear free Middle East, "including the Gulf". Rice also spoke about Hamas, arguing that the United States would "not cross in dealing with a terrorist group like Hamas, but the Palestinian people deserve our support". On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia unsuccessfully argued to the Bush administration that shutting off aid to the Palestinian government and isolating its new Hamas leaders would radicalise a destitute population and set back the cause of peace with Israel.
