Advanced Charting Techniques | Cameron May | 3-6-26 In this video, we explore how traders might use the Average Directional Index (ADX) to evaluate trend strength when planning a swing trade. The ADX doesn’t indicate direction, but instead measures the strength of a trend, potentially helping traders determine whether a stock is trending strongly or moving sideways. Using current market examples on the thinkorswim Desktop trading platform, we’ll walk through how the ADX might provide helpful context for identifying potential trading environments. We’ll also combine the ADX with the MACD Histogram to build a scan designed to locate stocks trading in a sideways channel that may be setting up for a potential swing opportunity. After constructing the scan, we’ll review possible candidates and discuss how these indicators might be used together to plan and place an example trade in a paperMoney portfolio. As always, the goal is to illustrate how traders might apply technical tools to evaluate opportunities while remaining mindful of the risks involved.
