Follow, Listen, Support: https://linktr.ee/rachelsarahthomas CHANNEL INFO: Assyrian-American singer Rachel Sarah Thomas blends folkloric and pop music from Iraq, Iran, and Syria with funk, soul, and rock n' roll. Check out her EP Sheekar, available on all streaming platforms - Link here --https://linktr.ee/rachelsarahthomas Raised with a deep appreciation for her cultural roots, Thomas grew up speaking and writing in Neo-Aramaic - a language that most people believe is extinct. While immersed in the dance, liturgical, and folk music traditions of her Assyrian family, she discovered her passion for music. Thomas spent years exploring her musical identity in the vibrant independent music scene of Chicago. She embarked on her electrifying pop project, KSRA, and collaborated with esteemed artists such as Thelonious Martin and NYLO, and even worked with rap legend Talib Kweli. She also produced a record with the Grammy-winning duo, Tha Bizness. Despite her success, she realized there wasn't a space where she felt fully represented. So, she created her newest project, Sheekar released in February 2024. Sheekar (pronounced She Cɛr) is a celebration of Rachel's blended identity, a powerful East-meets-West fusion that proudly showcases the beauty and richness of her culture. Her music is a testament to the shared experiences of people from different backgrounds, and she hopes to inspire non-Assyrian people to appreciate and enjoy her culture while also introducing Assyrian people to a fresh and exciting take on their own music. August 7th Assyrian Martyrs' Day - when we commemorate those who sacrificed themselves for us. For martyrs day I wanted to release a folk version of Nishra Tkhome, or Ya Nishra D’Tkhome. This song is so old and, as far as I know, was first recorded by Gibrail Sayad right after the Simile massacre of 1933. We’re nearly a century away from that moment, and we are still here - as Nardin Sarkis from Mesoportrayal puts it - a diaspora in bloom. This song is my way of honoring all those who fought and died, past and present, so that I could be here today and have my Assyrian culture. In the song, which takes it’s text from the poem written by Assyrian Nationalist and martyr Freidon Atoraya, the singer pleads to a large bronze colored eagle from the village of Tkhome to carry him over the lands of the Assyrians all the way to Nineveh, where he will touch down and remember, pray, and weep for the martyrs. There’s one line that says, “...Porqanit Dyimme, Min Paghree oo Dimmee” “...The savior of my mother, from my flesh and blood.” I got goosebumps while singing the words 'flesh and blood.' There is a real physical connection we all have to people we never met in the past, who’ve died for us. In all of us there exists the spirit of our ancestors, their struggles, their pain, and their wisdom. We are directly tied to them. We honor them today with remembrance, and honor their sacrifice by uplifting our voices which, without them, would not exist. Special Thanks to Marcos Rios of @RiosTrio for co-arranging and accompanying me on guitar. CHANNEL INFO: Rachel Sarah Thomas is a singer songwriter influenced by 1970's American Folk and 90's RnB.
