From conviction for attempted murder to reform – The Louis Mallia Story

In 2007, Louis Mallia was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the attempted murder of Gordon Calleja. Mallia's life is a compelling narrative of crime, incarceration, and transformation. Born in Valletta, Malta, Mallia's early years were marked by hardship and institutionalization. After a childhood of institutionalised care, Mallia was imprisoned by the age of 17- His early exposure to drugs and association with delinquent peers led him down a path of theft and substance abuse, crimes committed to sustain his addiction. The depths of his despair were such that he resorted to self-harm, a testament to the grip that addiction had on his life .​ Over the years, Mallia amassed a staggering 37 convictions, 13 of which were punishable by imprisonment. His criminal record includes a range of offences, from theft and drug-related crimes to attempted murder. Mallia's story took a transformative turn during his final years of incarceration. He became involved with the RISe Foundation, a community-based rehabilitation programme in Malta dedicated to supporting offenders in changing their behaviour and attitudes before re-entering society. Through this programme, Mallia confronted the root causes of his criminal behaviour, including his addiction and the trauma of his early life. He embraced the opportunity to reform, demonstrating a commitment to personal growth and societal reintegration .​ Upon his release, Mallia continued his journey of redemption by engaging in community service. He became involved with the Franciscan Kitchen, an initiative aimed at supporting the homeless and destitute in Malta. In this role, he found purpose in helping others, drawing from his own experiences to empathize with those facing hardship. His work with the Franciscan Kitchen not only provided tangible assistance to those in need but also symbolized his commitment to giving back to the community he once harmed .​ Mallia has openly shared his life story, participating in interviews and discussions to shed light on the challenges of addiction, crime, and rehabilitation. By recounting his experiences, Mallia aims to inspire others to seek help and to understand that transformation is achievable with the right support and determination.​
