Boom! We're back with MBR’s 2025 Trail Bike of the Year test. As always, we’ve split the test into two separate categories, direct sales and shop bought bikes. And first up, it’s the direct sales brands that deliver the best value bikes straight to your door in a box. But which one is the ultimate trail bike? That’s what we're here to find out. 0:18 Intro 2:05 Propain Hugene 2 CF 29 9:27 Privateer 141 17:33 Canyon Spectral CF 9 24:29 YT Jeffsy Core 3 AL 33:17 Outro All of the big hitters in the direct sales space are represented in this test, with three key bike brands from Germany and one from the UK. And the criteria for this year’s test could not have been more straightforward. All bikes had to be full 29ers, all had to boast 140 to 150mm suspension travel, and all had to cost around £4k at retail price. Meet the Bikes: Privateer 141 £3,949 - • Propain Hugene 2: The lightweight, 140mm t... Propain Hugene 2 CF 29 £4,335 - • Propain Hugene 2: The lightweight, 140mm t... YT Jeffsy Core 3 AL £4,500 - • YT Jeffsy Core 3 AL - The goldilocks trail... Canyon Spectral CF 9 £4,699 - • Canyon Spectral CF 9 - The modern trail bi... Yes, we appreciate that the current climate means that the prices of these bikes are as volatile as shifting sands, which is why we based our final ratings on the original prices, not the discounted ones. Value is clearly important though, so it’s worth pointing out that the Privateer 141 and YT Jeffsy Core 3 AL both have alloy frames, while the Propain Hugene 2 CF and Canyon Spectral CF 9 are both full carbon. Which makes the Propain and Canyon the two lightest bikes in test. To make the testing process as fair as possible, we fitted the same WTB tyres, grips and saddles to all four bikes. So not only were the contact points with the ground identical on each bike, the contact points with the bike and rider were all the same too. This makes testing the bikes much less of a guessing game, so we want to thank WTB for coming on board as a sponsor for the 2025 Trail Bike of the Year test. Abus helmets also sponsored the test, and we used the Cliffhanger Mips and Moventor 2.0 for the duration of the test. You can check out all of the products we used here: https://www.wtb.com/collections/all https://www.abus.com/uk/Consumer/Bike... The three German bikes in this test all came with RockShox Lyrik Ultimate forks and Super Deluxe shocks. And with the WTB control components fitted, we could really isolate the underlying performance of each bike. Only Privateer broke the mould with a Performance Elite level Fox 36 fork and Float X shock. And given the similarities between all four bikes, we were actually surprised by the differences in handling and ride performance. At one end of the spectrum the Propain Hugene feels closer to a down country bike, while at the opposite end the Privateer 141 blurs the line between trail and enduro. Canyon and YT are clearly more focused on the middle ground, which definitely makes them better do-it-all trail bikes. But even then, they are still quite different in character. The Canyon is fast, efficient and direct, even if a little unforgiving at times. In contrast, the YT is more laid back, not as stiff and way more playful and fun, even if it’s not as good value as the Canyon. Well, at least at the original retail price. So neither bike is perfect but for different reasons, and both are really good. Which is why we gave the Canyon and YT the same 9 rating, even if we preferred the overall ride quality of the YT Jeffsy Core 3 AL. So that wraps up the direct sales portion of this year’s test.
