Rachmaninoff composed Prelude No. 10, Op. 32 in 1910 along with twelve other preludes contained within the Opus. This outpouring of music in such a condensed time is testament to his musical genius. 1910 is the same year my home in Washington was built. As a musician and architect, it is humbling to perform this piece within the walls that have absorbed stories and memories from those before me, the floors that supported families and their belongings now holding my piano and me. Music has the ability to transcend the notion of time we encounter on a daily basis in the form of hours, minutes, and seconds, and places us within a broader context of existence. This January I was fortunate to acquire a C. Bechstein grand piano hand built in Berlin, Germany in 1964. Originally purchased by RCA Red Seal Records, the piano was purchased by Sound Stage Studios in Nashville, Tennessee in the 1980's and can be heard on several artists' albums including George Straight, John Schneider, Reba McEntire, Blue Monday and Jimmy Buffet. Our paths crossed during a spontaneous online search and I flew to Atlanta to meet the instrument. The piano's deep tone and lyrical "bel canto" voice inspired me to study this Prelude. I am grateful to share this adventure through music and film, and I hope each listener finds a moment of peace, solitude, or discovery. Thank you for watching.
