Fred Cockerham was triple-threat: He was a master fiddler, a versatile and innovative banjo player, and he had a chin that wouldn't quit. He led and co-led several award-winning string bands in the area around Galax, VA and Mt. Airy, NC, and he was one of the few local musicians who made music his main profession. Although he is best known for his collaborations with friend and fellow Surry County (NC) fiddler Tommy Jarrell, "Chisel Chin" Cockerham was known far and wide through the New River Valley and played regularly with Fields Ward, Wilson Ramey, Oscar Jenkins, Kyle Creed and George Pegram before he ever entered a studio with his best known partner. In the last decade of his life, Fred (originally from Low Gap, NC, but by then living in Belews Creek, NC) passed on some of his style to hundreds of traditional music fans who sought him out, as Ray Alden did for this recording.
