The name "Gonasika" comes from the hill's shape, which resembles the nostrils of a cow. It flows for approximately 360 kilometers before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. It flows through the districts of Keonjhar, Bhadrak, and Jajpur. For a portion of its journey, it also forms a natural boundary between Odisha and Jharkhand. It eventually joins the Brahmani River at Dhamra near the coast, forming a large delta before reaching the sea.
