Sydney has an extensive motorway network, but there's a catch. More than 67% of Sydney's motorways charge a toll. Sydney has been dubbed one of the most heavily tolled cities in the world, and there’s no end in sight, with most of the toll contracts not due to expire for over 20 years. Cost of living is one of the most important issues in the upcoming NSW State Election, and both sides of the government have promised to try and reform Sydney’s toll problem...but this isn’t a problem with a simple solution. In this video, I'll provide a heavily detailed analysis into Sydney's tolling nightmare, delving into the many benefits of toll roads, but also its many disadvantages, explaining Sydney's highly disparate network, the inequitable fees that disproportionately impact Western Sydney residents, the attempts by the government to reform Sydney's toll hell, and the one private company - Transurban - who owns and produces record profits from almost every toll road in Sydney.
