When Rita first started reading about Wakkerstroom’s old buildings, it was “just for my own interest.” She kept files, made notes, learned the stories behind buildings she had walked past for years. In “Wakkerstroom | What We Come to Understand”, she takes us through some of the village’s most loved buildings - the little Catholic church, the old Barclays bank, the Barry building - and the lives woven through them: collectors, musicians, a woman living in an office with an outside toilet, a father who never stopped talking about his hometown. As Rita walks and remembers, the film becomes not just a portrait of Wakkerstroom’s architecture, but of how a person slowly comes to understand a place - and, through it, a parent. It’s a quiet story about streets, stories and the moment when someone else’s nostalgia finally makes sense.
