We Didn't Expect This In Estonia!

Welcome to Estonia! It's our first day exploring this Baltic country. We drive a car from the capital of Tallinn to two totally different and fascinating places. First is Viru Bog, a bog with a raised walkway and lookout tower located about 50km from Tallinn in Lahemaa National Park. More than 7% of Estonia is covered by bogs and they're extremely popular places to go and experience nature. We feel very lucky for perfect weather, magical light, and nobody else in the whole bog. After a quick picnic in the car, we drive to an abandoned submarine base called Hara. It was built by the Soviets between 1956 and 1958 and used until Estonia's independence. The base was a restricted zone where underwater engineers worked on demagnetizing submarines to make them less susceptible to naval mines. The base has since fallen into disrepair, the buildings have been gutted, and there's a lot of graffiti. Like the bog, we're the only ones around.
