Total Shoulder Replacement (TSR), also known as Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (TSA) or Anatomic Total Shoulder Replacement, is a surgery to replace parts of the shoulder joint with artificial implants. This procedure addresses severe shoulder arthritis, which results from the deterioration of articular cartilage allowing bone-on-bone contact, causing pain, inflammation, and reduced mobility. Arthritis may develop through aging, injury, or autoimmune diseases. TSR involves replacing the humeral head and resurfacing the glenoid cavity. The surgery, lasting 1-3 hours under general or regional anesthesia, includes preparing the bone surfaces, inserting a humeral stem, and attaching the ball component of the implant. Options like press-fitting or using bone cement are determined based on bone quality. Post-surgery, patients generally stay in the hospital for 2-3 days, use a sling, and undergo a regimen of physical therapy to restore mobility and strength. Full recovery can take 6-12 months. Risks include infection, blood clots, and implant problems such as loosening or wear. See more physician interviews and medical animations at https://www.understandortho.com
