All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. We praise Him, seek His assistance and forgiveness, and we ask Him to grant us sincerity in our worship. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, his companions, and all those who follow his noble path until the Day of Judgment. Respected brothers and sisters, Among the beautiful and wisdom-filled teachings of Islam is the encouragement of Suhur (pre-dawn meal) during the days of fasting. Islam is a religion of balance, mercy, and facilitation; therefore, even in acts of devotion, Allah grants ease and spiritual nourishment. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: تَسَحَّرُوا فَإِنَّ فِي السَّحُورِ بَرَكَةً "Take Suhur, for indeed there is blessing in Suhur." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1923; Sahih Muslim) This concise yet profound Prophetic statement contains immense wisdom and spiritual guidance. The Meaning and Wisdom of Suhur Suhur refers to the meal consumed during the final portion of the night before the beginning of the fast. The word itself derives from “Sahar,” the blessed pre-dawn time — a moment associated with mercy, supplication, and divine acceptance. The Prophet ﷺ further emphasized its importance when he said: فَصْلُ مَا بَيْنَ صِيَامِنَا وَصِيَامِ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ أَكْلَةُ السَّحَرِ "The distinction between our fasting and the fasting of the People of the Book is the Suhur meal." (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1096) Thus, Suhur is not merely nourishment; it is a symbol of Islamic identity, obedience, and adherence to the Sunnah. The Blessings Contained in Suhur Dear listeners, The blessing (barakah) of Suhur manifests in multiple dimensions: Spiritual blessing, as it represents obedience to the command of the Prophet ﷺ. Physical strength, enabling the believer to worship with endurance and vitality. Moral encouragement, fostering discipline, gratitude, and mindfulness. Divine mercy, as narrated that Allah bestows mercy upon those who partake in Suhur and His angels supplicate for them. Suhur therefore becomes an act of devotion, a means of empowerment, and a source of divine reward. A Lesson in Moderation and Gratitude Islam does not advocate hardship without wisdom. Rather, it teaches moderation, resilience, and purposeful devotion. Through Suhur, the believer begins the fast with intention, awareness, and reliance upon Allah. Even a small amount of food or a sip of water fulfills this Sunnah, demonstrating that sincerity outweighs abundance. Practical Encouragement Beloved brothers and sisters, Let us revive this noble Sunnah by: Awakening with sincere intention, Engaging in remembrance and supplication before dawn, Encouraging our families toward this blessed practice, Beginning our fast with gratitude and spiritual readiness. By observing Suhur, we do not merely prepare our bodies for fasting; we prepare our hearts for closeness to Allah. Conclusion In conclusion, Suhur is a blessed tradition, a Prophetic practice, and a manifestation of divine mercy. It strengthens faith, distinguishes the Muslim identity, and transforms an ordinary meal into an extraordinary act of worship. May Allah grant us the ability to follow the Sunnah faithfully, to appreciate the blessings He has bestowed upon us, and to observe our fasting with sincerity, patience. Mohammad Abrar Qasmi
