On the night of August 4, 1964, the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin were dark and restless as USS Turner Joy moved through the night. Inside the destroyer’s dimly lit radar room, the nervous crew intently scanned the screens. Suddenly, a blip appeared on the radar. Then another. To Seaman Dennis Plzak, an experienced radarman who’d had his eyes fixed on the screen for days on end now, this was a sure sign that they were under attack by a series of patrol ships. Orders came fast. The crew moved rapidly to light up the night sky with Turner Joy's powerful 5-inch guns. A torpedo wake appeared from the darkness, but no one could be sure where it had come from. Turner Joy swerved hard to avoid the phantom threat, leaving the crew questioning whether it had been real at all or just a trick of the restless waters. Out of nowhere, a torpedo wake streaked across the water. The crew couldn’t pinpoint its origin, but they opened fire without hesitation. Rounds from Turner Joy tore into the blackness, and the crew prepared to fight an enemy they couldn’t see…
