This brief video shares the celebration of beloved teacher, artist, activist, and notable WW II veteran of the famous 442nd Infantry Regiment at the Whittier Art Gallery on Painter Avenue, Whittier, CA. We have been friends since I began teaching in the El Rancho District in 1977 where I met Grace, Yosh's wife. Grace was the director of the Gifted and Talented Program. She came up to me on my first day at El Rancho High School and said, "Tim McMullen. I knew your parents when they first moved to Whittier (circa 1950)." Grace and I became good friends, and through the years we had the privilege of attending many art exhibits of the Nakamura family. Yosh, Grace, their sons Daniel and Joel, and their daughter Linda, are all accomplished artists in many different genres including origami, painting, sculpture, and photography. Grace and Yosh were also responsible for sponsoring my wife Carolyn's entry into the Hillcrest Art Festival where she exhibited her photographs for a number of years. When our dear Grace passed, I was honored to be asked to speak at her memorial at Hillcrest Church. This does not document the wealth of wonderful art that Yoshio has produced over the years, but it was really just made as a quick review of the artist's reception on Saturday, October 7. My parents, Mel and Jennifer McMullen, who had known Yosh and Grace all those years ago and who have just recently returned to live in Whittier after 50 years of living in San Bernardino, were also able to attend. The exhibit runs until the 28th, and it is well worth a visit.
