Drive with me on an ultra high definition driving tour through Beaumont, Texas. Beaumont is located in Jefferson County. It is a port city located in East Texas, near the border of Louisiana. Beaumont was founded in 1835 and has a population of roughly 120,000 people. Beaumont is perhaps most famous for Spindletop, where oil was discovered in 1901. Iconic photos of Spindletop show how the oil sprayed from the top of the oil derrick in what is referred to as a gusher. Spindletop is considered to be the start of the Texas oil boom. Beaumont became the home of many Texas oil tycoons. Beaumont is located on the Gulf Coast, and has been severely impacted by several hurricanes. Hurricane Laura was the most recent storm to impact the Beaumont area when it made landfall in 2020.
