James Kalm is reeling in the first day of summer heat for the 2016 season. As a cooling diversion, he seeks refuge in the overcast atmospheric paintings of “Santa Cruz”. Wendy White has been a presence on the New York painting scene for the last decade, and has received national and international critical recognition for her inventive investigation of abstraction. Working as a painter, White nevertheless employs elements of sculpture and installation to complicate the work. Like Chris Martin, White uses the plane of the painting as a self referential object that can be layered, projected out from or leaned against the wall. Mixing methods and techniques the artist seeks to invoke the “derelict gesture” of graffiti and the organic build up of surface color in public spaces. In a brief interview, White comments on aspects of this exhibition. This program was recorded June 21, 2016.
