The National COTs Project 2021 - 2023 Funded by the National Environment Fund through the Ministry of Tourism Implemented by Reef Conservation In collaboration with: The National COTs Project Steering Committee , the National Coast Guard, the Albion Fisheries Research Centre, the Mauritius Oceanography Institute, NECCF, Continental shelf, Beach authority, Ministry of Tourism, Tourism Authority ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Crown of thorns, Acanthaster spp., are large sea-stars that feed on corals and are naturally occurring around Mauritius. Unfortunately, outbreaks of Crown of thorns have been observed in the waters around Mauritius, posing a threat to coral reefs. These outbreaks, that can lead to mass coral mortalities, are mainly due to climate change, environmental pollution and overfishing of predators. To mitigate their impacts, Reef Conservation, in collaboration with partners, is actively working to control these outbreaks and raise awareness about this threat to coral reefs.
