What does it take to start pursuing your purpose when you feel like you have nothing? In this episode, I take you back to the very beginning of my journey, a moment shaped by loss, survival, and unexpected opportunity. After losing both of my parents to AIDS and navigating life in a child-headed household with my brother, my only focus at 18 was finding a job so we could put food on the table. What I didn’t know at the time was that my first job would place me at the heart of one of the biggest HIV prevention movements in the world. As a LoveLife Groundbreaker, I found myself standing in front of classrooms educating young people about HIV prevention something that hit incredibly close to home after losing both my parents to the disease. What began as a job to survive slowly became the beginning of discovering my purpose. In this episode, I reflect on the power of starting where you are, the courage that comes with youth, and how purpose can sometimes find you long before you feel ready for it. What to Expect 00:00 — Opening ReflectionI reflect on the irony of my first job being HIV prevention education after losing both my parents to AIDS. 01:08 — The Audacity of 18Why I call this chapter of my life “the audacity of 18” and how youth can make you believe anything is possible. 03:06 — Losing My ParentsThe impact of losing both my mother and father and navigating life as part of a child-headed household. 06:18 — Passing Matric Against the OddsHow I managed to complete school during one of the most difficult seasons of my life. 07:25 — My First Job at LoveLifeHow I became one of the first HIV prevention Groundbreakers in Khayelitsha and what that experience meant for me. 09:30 — The Beginning of a Bigger VisionThe moment I began to realise that many other young people were facing the same struggles I had experienced. 10:53 — Mentors Who Shaped My JourneyThe incredible people who helped me turn my story into something powerful rather than something that held me back. 11:42 — Finding My VoiceHow speaking in classrooms eventually led to speaking on bigger stages. 13:24 — Facing Self-DoubtThe moments of doubt I experienced while stepping into spaces I never imagined I would be in. 15:05 — The Power of Starting YoungWhy starting young sometimes gives you the courage to try things that others might hesitate to pursue. 16:30 — The Lesson I Want to Leave You WithYou can start at any point in life. Purpose simply requires you to show up. Closing Thought If there’s one thing I want you to take away from this conversation, it’s this: You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. Sometimes all it takes is the audacity to show up and start.
