Elizabeth (Liz, Ellie) passed on December 1 at her home in Eugene, Oregon. This YouTube channel is for friends and family to share memories of an incredible person. This was my opening message at her memorial at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Eugene Good afternoon. Welcome to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Eugene—And welcome to our friends around the globe joining us on Zoom. My name is Stace Rierson and my pronouns are she/her. I knew her as Ellie, some knew her as Elizabeth, others as Liz; yet many knew her by her dead name, which we will respectfully refrain from using today. Ellie shared on her Facebook page, [quote] “I took the first name ‘Elizabeth’ as that was the name my parents gave me, en utero. I added to my original middle name ‘Dylan’ with the prefix ‘Star’ to remember early transgender activists Silvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson and the organization they created, S.T.A.R. (Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries) to assist and advocate for homeless transgender youth in Greenwich Village.”[end quote] In another post she noted, [quote] “My nickname is evolving. Many are calling me 'Ellie', because we have a Liz here already, at Silvia Rivera Shelter. My Japanese first-language speaking friends are not fond of saying 'Liz' or 'Ellie', so I tell them that they can call me "Ranma-chan", the animae character who changes from male to female when dunked in water!” [end quote] And as for the last name “Moran,” she had passion for Ireland and adopted the Irish surname from her great-grandfather, John Patrick Moran, as spirited an Irishman as you'd ever meet. I met Ellie here, at church. Our first long conversation was just over 2 years ago at the church’s thanksgiving dinner in 2023. She was excited to tell me about her upcoming move to Peace Village, a new housing cooperative in Eugene. I was jealous because I was on the waitlist; but a month later, I became her neighbor where we lived 30’ apart. For the Thanksgiving celebration this year at Peace Village, Ellie roasted a turkey for the first time ever. She was truly proud of her edible work of art. Days later, she passed on to what she called, “the next level of learning.”
