Dave McKeen has developed some modern tech to address the DeLorean's cooling fan circuit. Starting with a solid-state fan relay that offers some useful features like delayed start and 20-second minimum fan run time. Additionally Mr. Keen developed a Fan Fail Module with double fuses that gives the driver different alerts via the Cooling Fan Fail warning lamp. In this video we also trouble-shoot a Fan Fail warning lamp that wasn't flashing. The DeLorean Solid-State Fan Relay by Dave McKeen Engineering: Note: If you have another fan controller you need to remove it and install the fused jumpers in the blue fan fail socket or install my fan fail unit into the socket. 1) The Fan relay is the relay beside the blue fan fail relay. Do not install this unit into any other relay position. This unit delays the fan turn on for one second to allow the AC compressor to start and the AC clutch current to settle. The fans will then run for a minimum of 20 seconds. This minimum time prevents the fans from cycling on and off if your AC compressor needs to cycle. This prevents sudden voltage fluctuations and should improve AC performance. 2) Pull the old relay from its socket. I find it better to rock the relay a little as you are pulling it up. Keep the old relay as a spare. 3) Install the new relay matching the position of the pins with the socket. Again a little rocking of the unit while you press it down works better. Do not use excessive force or you can press one or more of the socket pins out of the connector. But be sure the unit is fully seated into the socket. 4) To test the unit, turn your ignition key to ON. Turn your AC to ON (normal, max or bi-level). Your fans should start running in one second. Now turn your key to off. Your fans should continue to run for 20 seconds and then shut off. 5) Note: A second fan relay used with modified wiring is marked FAN #2 which is programmed with a 3 second delay and 22 second on time. This will result in a sequence of the fans with a two second offset. ----------------------------------------------------------------- In addition to the solid-state fan relay, Mr. McKeen developed a working fan fail module that is double-fused. That means you can bypass the circuit breaker as now it is redundant. You can leave the breaker in place, as I do in this video and save that for another day. But consider jumpering or bypassing it because if it were to fail, and since it is upstream of the fan fail unit in the circuit, you would not get a fan fail warning light indicator! The DeLorean Fan Fail Module Revision K by Dave McKeen Engneering: 1) The Fan Fail socket is the blue relay socket. Do not install this unit into any other relay position. This unit signals the user if one or both fans have less than 10 volts going to each fan. This warning can be caused by a blown fuse or bad connection powering the fan fail unit. 2) A single flashing indicates one fan has a problem. 3) A double flashing will indicate a problem with both fans. 4) A triple flashing indicates the fan fail unit is above 85 degrees C. This is mostly an indicator your fans are drawing to much current. Remove the cover from you relay compartment until you can get those fans replaced. I suggest you install the unit without one or both fuses to test that your fan fail lamp is working. With the unit installed, start the car and get the fans to turn on. If the air temp is not to cold you can just switch the AC on. Otherwise you can jumper the otterstat. 2) Units are shipped with 20 amp fuses. Low power fans could use fuses rated at less than 20 amps but remember fuses get hotter the closer you run them near their rated currents. Note: Do not use a screw driver to remove these units from the relay socket. That will damage the unit and void all warranty. Optionally, you can remove the 40 amp circuit breaker wires between the fan relay socket and fan fail socket an install a jumper in those pin locations. Since you now have each fan fused, the circuit breaker is redundant. If the circuit breaker were to fail, you would not get a fan fail warning since there would be no power to the fan fail unit. These wires should be the large brown/orange and large brown/slate wires. But I think some colors were changed on some cars. #delorean #backtothefuture #dmc12 #stainlesssteel #cars #autos #customdelorean #dmc #deloreanmotorcompany #deloreantech #deloreango #deloreanindustries #deloreanownersassociation #deloreaneurope #deloreanworld #deloreanmotorcars #prv #lotus #giugiaro #GiorgettoGiugiaro #sportscars #irishcar #exoticcar #deloreanpartsnorthwest #belfast #martymcfly #fluxcapacitor #docbrown #bttf #timemachine #timetravel
