I have heard several individuals recently mention they were confused about how the Conditions of Participation for Hospitals ties to the State Operations Manual ties to Accrediting Organizations standards ties to Code. So, we are going to try and clear it up by walking through an example. In short, it’s kind of like a pyramid becoming more detailed and prescriptive as you get to the bottom. CFR says to keep your Hosptial safe, Tags provide interpretive guidelines of what that means, AO’s may detail it further and use a certain checklist, but that doesn’t mean that your facility is truly safe and in compliance. In the end, the most perspective and detailed regulations come from the Code. If you’re in compliance with the Codes and Standards, then you are in compliance with all the others.
