Travel north in Great Britain and you'll soon run out of road. Hop on a ferry and you'll make it to Orkney in around 8 hours. Stay on the ferry, and you'll continue north before being deposited on the Shetland Mainland. Drive north, take two further ferries, and finally arrive at Unst. Continue north on Unst, and you will eventually come to Saxa Vord. You have reached the most northerly radar station in Britain. The area has been used for early warning since the Second World War when a Chain Home station was constructed at Skaw. It would be 1955/56 when the construction of a new radar station on the hill overlooking Skaw would be complete. This was the formation of RAF Saxa Vord. The radar station would see continuous use throughout the Cold War, eventually closing its doors in 2006 when the last radar was removed. A deteriorating situation in Eastern Europe throughout the subsequent decade has seen the station reactivated, albeit with a much smaller footprint operating as a Remote Radar Head. The lower site at Saxa Vord was sold into private hands in 2012 but has suffered from neglect and decay. There are an incredible number of buildings and internal features remaining, including the Admiralty Building constructed for a secret Admiralty underwater submarine detection system; an R10 bunker constructed during the early ROTOR phases, and finally the unique R101 operations block complete with generator and telephone exchange equipment. Put on the kettle, dim the lights and join me on my longest video yet. I hope you enjoy it.
