The Union government has revoked the detention of climate activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Saturday. Wangchuk had been detained six months ago for allegedly inciting a mob with provocative statements during violent protests in Leh in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The activist was later shifted to Jodhpur Central Jail in Jodhpur, Rajasthan under preventive detention laws. In its statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the decision to revoke the detention was taken after due consideration, noting that Wangchuk had already completed nearly half of the detention period allowed under the NSA. The government had earlier argued that the activist’s detention was necessary to maintain public order following violent protests in Ladakh demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status. The clashes had left four people dead and around 90 injured. Reacting to the decision, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor welcomed the move but questioned the length of the detention. In a post on X, he wrote that while he was “delighted” by the revocation, 169 days in detention appeared to be an inordinately long time. The case had also reached the Supreme Court of India, which earlier questioned discrepancies in translated speeches cited by the government while detaining Wangchuk under the NSA. The bench noted that the translated version appeared significantly longer and materially different from the original remarks, which the activist’s counsel said were limited to condemning violence. #sonamwangchuk #ladakhprotests #nationalsecurityact #leh #ladakh #shashitharoor #supremecourt #indianews #politics #breakingnews ..............................................................................................
