WEST LINDSEY PARISH #100: SWINHOPE Right on the Easternmost boundary of West Lindsey, you’ll find the parish of Swinhope. This is a tiny place that can barely be termed a village, but is, thanks to its church. Swinhope was recorded in the Domesday Book as Suinhope. The name literally means “Swine valley”, and records from 1887 show an alternative name for this place – Swinyhope. Whatever you want to call it, Swinhope consists of very few houses, yet still commands a population of nearly 200. We’ll discover why that’s the case in this video. In medieval times, Swinhope was a much bigger settlement, centred around its church, but like so many other places in West Lindsey, the original village was soon to be deserted. There are no earthworks of a former village here though, disappointingly, as they were destroyed in 1969. There are still some cropmarks here and there though. The village has for centuries, been associated with the Alington family, the most notable member of which was the MP, Marmaduke Alington. Swinhope isn’t the kind of place you can easily walk around. Even though its small, it’s elongated nature means a fair old trek between its limited landmarks, so for this one, the car came into its own. In this episode we’ll also be seeing Swinhope Hall and a pub which is right on the parish boundary with Thorganby – which by the way, is recorded with Swinhope for census purposes.
