When the asura king Shumbha learned that Chanda and Munda and the asura armies had been destroyed, his anger overflowed, and he gathered all the asura forces together. The asura armies surrounded Goddess Chandika, her lion, and Goddess Kali from all four sides. To help the Goddess destroy the asura armies, the powers (shaktis) of Brahma, Maheshvara (Shiva), Mahavishnu, Karttikeya, Indra, and others emerged from their bodies and manifested as the Sapta Matrikas (Seven Mother Goddesses). Each feminine power assumed the same form, ornaments, weapons, and mounts as the corresponding male deity. Thus, the Seven Divine Maidens came forth and reached Goddess Chandi. From Brahma, Brahmani appeared, riding the swan, holding a rosary (akshamala) and a water pot (kamandalu). From Maheshvara, adorned with the crescent moon, wielding the damaru and trident, and riding the bull, arose Maheshvari. With the peacock as her mount, holding the vajra and shakti weapon, and bearing the form of Lord Muruga (Skanda), Kaumari manifested. From Vishnu, riding Garuda, holding the conch, discus, mace, and lotus, appeared Vaishnavi. With the lion as her mount, assuming the Yajna-Varaha form of Lord Hari, and holding the staff and plough, the divine power took the form of Varahi. From Indra, riding the elephant and bearing the vajra and other powerful weapons, manifested Goddess Indrani. From Goddess Chandi herself emerged Goddess Chamundi. She bore in her four hands a trident, a severed head, a sword, and a skull-cup. Dark-complexioned, three-eyed, with protruding fangs, clad in a tiger skin, and adorned with a garland of skulls, she was terrifying in form. Notably, she was the incarnation who destroyed the demons Chanda and Munda. Along with the Sapta Matrikas, there appeared Narasimhi, also known as Pratyangira, possessing a body like Narasimha, whose bristling mane shook the very constellations. From Ganesha manifested Vinayaki. From the body of the Goddess emerged Chandika, of an extremely fearsome form, howling like hundreds of jackals, manifesting as the power of Goddess Kaushiki. Endowed with invincible power, Goddess Chandika sent Ishvara (Shiva) as her messenger to Shumbha and Nishumbha. She instructed him to convey her message to the asuras assembled for war: “Indra must regain sovereignty over the three worlds. The gods must once again receive their shares in the sacrifices. If you wish to remain alive, you must retreat to the netherworld. Otherwise, my jackals will be satisfied with your flesh.” Shiva conveyed the Goddess’s message exactly as spoken. Since Shiva went as a messenger on behalf of Goddess Kaushiki, she thereafter came to be known as Shiva-Duti (She who sent Shiva as her envoy).
